With leaders like Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos blazing the trail of fortune in business, embarking on a start-up can be a fun, adventurous, and lucrative journey. How can you take your great idea and turn it into a profitable business? Determining the initial steps to get started can the best hardest part. Let’s look at a few tips to help you find success.

Find a Partner

It may be tempting to keep your new idea all to yourself, but studies show that start-ups are more successful when two partners are involved. Having a co-founder offers additional financial resources, someone to brainstorm and evaluate ideas with, and a partner to shoulder the inevitable ups and downs that are to come. Take great care when choosing a partner to ensure that they not only have the knowledge and financial means to help your start-up, but that they also have reliable character and integrity as well. Your partner needs to be someone you can not only trust your business with but also someone who has the emotional stability to handle potential struggles and disagreements.

Find a Mentor

In addition to a trustworthy cofounder, find a mentor.  A seasoned veteran in your field can be an invaluable resource of knowledge to help move your business in the right direction.  The right mentor can help you successfully create a business plan and offer smart, sound advice that will save you time and money right from the start.

Time Management

One of the perks of a start-up is the flexibility to make your own schedule and be your own boss, but be careful to plan your time wisely. According to Forbes, it is important to schedule each part of your day — even designating specific times to check your email — in order to be efficient and accomplish your goals. Small distractions can easily add up and reduce your overall productivity.

Home Office

If you are working from home, take the time to create a productive workspace. Good lighting increases efficiency and improves your mood. Position your office to take in as much natural light as possible, and add plants to your workspace. Studies show that the simple act of adding plants can not only increase work output but will also reduce illness and alleviate stress.

Overcome Fear

Stress is inevitable, but don’t allow the fear of failure to paralyze you. The fear of failure is a leading reason that many give up the pursuit of their business dreams, according to Entrepreneur. Cultivating a positive attitude and creating a sound business strategy will overcome any fear and lead you into success. Additionally, many of the most profitable entrepreneurs today faced many failures before they finally reached success in their businesses.

Realistic Expectations

Success in your new business is attainable, but it’s important to set realistic expectations. For example, if you are anticipating your start-up to take off and make millions within the first few months, you are likely to be disappointed. Most businesses take several months to a year just to get up and running, much less rake in millions of dollars in profit. It may be a good idea to continue your current job to have a steady source of income while you embark upon this new entrepreneurial journey.

Often the most difficult point when beginning a start-up is gathering the courage to take the first step. Create a confident business plan and surround yourself with people to inspire you and help you grow. Utilizing the tools at hand, you can take your great idea and turn it into a successful business.
